THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL BIRTH
Getting ready to be a new mom can be daunting and many moms-to-be worry about the best way to give birth. Resolution Health supports natural birth wherever possible because of the many benefits for both mom and baby.
Speak to your doctor about natural birth and consider this moving and bonding experience with your partner and your baby wherever it is medically viable.
It’s a gift that just keeps on giving. If you opt for natural birth, your labour may be shorter and quicker in future pregnancies. You will also be able to breastfeed immediately and more effectively than women who have had C-sections. And the best gift of all? Having a natural birth also makes it easier to bond with your newborn because you can have immediate contact with him or her.
Less respiratory risk for your baby. Babies who are born naturally are less likely to experience certain respiratory problems, such as fluid in the lungs - which is more common in infants born via C-section. The pressure of going through the birth canal helps to squeeze this extra fluid from the new-born’s lungs. Natural labour also helps release a hormone called epinephrine which clears fluids from the lungs.
Less risk for you. With a vaginal birth, there is no scarring, which means that your subsequent births have zero risk of tearing any uterine scars left over from a C-section. There is also less risk of you experiencing a maternal haemorrhage, blood clots or damage to your internal organs. You will also be sure to experience less postpartum pain. Lastly, studies have shown that the mortality risk is reduced when giving natural birth, compared to the higher risks associated with having a C-section operation.
Natural birth will not harm your sex life. There is a very common misperception that giving birth via C-section will prevent permanent damage to a woman’s sex life. In fact, C-sections can actually make intercourse more painful and there is a greater risk of scarring to your uterus. You are also much more vulnerable to infection.
