Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Types of diabetes

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, usually diagnosed in children and adolescents, is when the body is not producing enough insulin and the patient must therefore have daily injections of insulin. The cause of Type 1 diabetes is not known.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body cannot effectively use insulin. 90 Percent of all diabetes cases are Type 2 in nature and are largely caused by lack of exercise, being overweight and living an unhealthy lifestyle. Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring in children.

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. Women who suffer from this type of diabetes have a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
